The SME Education Foundation has taken an aggressive stance in supporting National Engineers Week – February 20-26 with the production and distribution of a new video, “Innovate: Fueling Change.”

This fast-paced ten-minute video introduces viewers to exciting careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The video follows a group of high school students as they address the need to use existing energy sources efficiently and explore alternative energy resources by converting French-fry grease into bio-fuel. The students also have the opportunity to visit a group of engineers that were members of the 2009 Penn State Solar Decathlon team.

We had two groups of high school students in and made several dozen solid body electric guitars. The participants really liked the results - turns out that manufacturing might be fun and interesting after all.

We're already planning the events for next summer. When we get hard information, it will be on the lab we b site at www.metalsound.org

Also, check out www.careerme.org.

A new Web site has been developed to excite high school and college students about the lucrative career opportunities in advanced manufacturing and soon help potential employers find where the next generation of manufacturing engineering talent is coming from: www.careerME.org.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation (SME- EF) and the National Center for Manufacturing Education (NCME) have partnered to design the site, which will serve to improve the image of the industry, especially during this economic downturn when news about manufacturing in the United States is less than stellar.

For information on how to bring this site to your area, contact me at baslin@sme.org

Please check out the recently updated website: www.manufacturingiscool.com

The site was developed by the SME Education Foundation. It is geared toward middle and high school students. We are constantly improving and updating this site so as to make it a fun, interactive place for students to learn about careers in manufacturing. Please introduce this site to your children and grandchildren and send my your feedback and suggestions. baslin@sme.org

This website is made possible through a generous grant from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation. http://www.smeef.org/
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation is committed to the educational needs of American youth and inspiring them to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education - essential skills demanded by industry for the present and future workforce; providing access to rigorous educational opportunities by providing financial support with awards and scholarships, and funding project-based curricula and activities designed to motivate learning.
